Chamber Debate Club (FYG03S)

Debate training aims to enhance students' debating skills, covering fundamental debate techniques, including argument construction, rebuttal strategies, and culminating in a debate simulation.

  • Participants: Secondary 3–6 students

Programme Objectives

 

  • Developing students an understanding of fundamental elements of debate, including refutation and rebuttal;
  • Equipping students with a robust understanding of salience and contemporary issues across a wide range of domains and disciplines.

Programme Content

 

The programme offers one class. Each class has a quota of 30 students.

Debate Training (10 hours)
Participants will:

  • learn the core principles of debate, including motion analysis, argument construction and effective rebuttal techniques;
  • develop impromptus speaking and active listening skills during debate;
  • explore the nuances of complex topics related to social policy, political theory and environmental ethics.

Annual Chamber Debate (3 hours) 

Participants will apply their learned skills in a debate simulation. Participants will be divided into groups to research and prepare arguments on contemporary real-world issues, such as environmental sustainability, future skills, digitalization, and technology.

  • Lots will be drawn in case of over-enrolment.
  • Successful applicants will be informed by the Institute through email.
  • If face-to-face classes are suspended during the programme period, the affected sessions will be rescheduled.
